INTRODUCTION FROM
OUR CHAIRMAN

Today we stand proudly 25 years on from the beginning of Abu Dhabi’s environmental journey inspired by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the Founding Father of the UAE.

As we look ahead to 2020, we are on the verge of launching the most significant national strategy of its kind. This strategy will prepare us for a pioneering journey of development where we will define our goals for the next fifty years across all vital sectors in the UAE.

Our priority is to address the local and global challenges of providing real environmental security, as well as outlining our efforts to protect biological diversity and the environment. These priorities stem from the UAE’s keenness to conserve nature.

We will strive to protect the progress and achievements of this country over the past few years in order to achieve truly sustainable development within economic, social and environmental dimensions.

Since its inception, the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) has implemented the vision of the Abu Dhabi government in the field of environmental and wildlife protection. During 2019, the agency witnessed several achievements that are in line with the strategic environmental goals of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. These goals are to conserve the environment and its natural resources, preserve biological diversity and protect endangered species.

SECRETARY GENERAL

In 2019, the agency had a year filled with achievements due to the combined efforts of our leadership, our clear vision and the efforts of our employees. We have worked diligently on implementing a strategy that has paved the way for us to address the main challenges faced by the UAE, such as climate change, groundwater waste, as well as land degradation and habitat loss.

Our achievements would not have been possible without the unwavering support of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE and the direction of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces. We have also received immense support from the consistent leadership of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Ruler’s Representative in Al Dhafra Region and Chairman of the Agency’s Board of Directors. Furthermore, we are grateful for the efforts of the distinguished members of the Board of Directors and our various stakeholders and partners across all of the UAE.

We are pleased to present to you, in its new electronic format, a review of our most significant achievements during last year in the 2019 Annual Report. We will continue to work for more success and progress in 2020 with the implementation of our government’s vision to achieve a balance between economic and social growth and environmental protection. As always, the agency will work towards ensuring the sustainability of our natural resources and the continuity of a better life for future generations.
