World Water Day

Statement by H.E. Razan Khalifa Al Mubarak Managing Director, Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi

21 March 2019

Water is the lifeblood of our planet, linking and maintaining every natural ecosystem found on Earth. This essential resource is responsible for sustaining the livelihood of all living beings and maintaining critical habitats for the plants and animals we share this world with. Given this intrinsic importance, it is imperative that we prioritise the sustainable and efficient management of our water sources to ensure that growing communities across the globe are able to gain greater access to clean and safe water.

Under the theme ‘Leaving no one behind’, we mark World Water Day 2019 to reaffirm our commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6, which calls to ensure the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all. The issue of water scarcity already affects every continent, with the Global Water Institute predicting that nearly 700 million people worldwide could be displaced by intense water shortages by 2030. We must continue to balance the pressures of rapid development and urbanisation with the protection and preservation of our water reserves, which are also being adversely impacted by the effects of climate change.

The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi is actively supporting the Abu Dhabi Government's goal to improve the efficiency of our water resources through targeted legislation and regulation. Tackling the global water security issue requires personal reflection and shared responsibility. Sustainably managing our individual water demand and consumption will allow us to create a lasting collective contribution that will be felt for generations to come.
