• The Abu Dhabi Sustainability Group (ADSG), a public, private partnership for the benefit of sustainable development, collaborates with its members and partners to raise awareness about the various sustainability challenges and promotes sharing of knowledge and best practices in the field.

 

Abu Dhabi, 19 December 2024: To enhance regional cooperation in the fields of scientific research, studies and conservation of ecosystems, a high-level delegation from the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) headed by Her Excellency Dr. Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary-General of the Agency, paid an official visit to the State of Qatar.

The visit included meetings with the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, and Qatar University, during which the Agency’s projects and achievements related to the emirate’s conservation and preservation of species and ecosystems were reviewed. In addition, the delegation highlighted EAD’s efforts to monitor and control water, air and soil quality. Areas of cooperation between the two countries and ways to enhance environmental sustainability and exchange scientific expertise were also discussed.

Coinciding with this visit, EAD's advanced marine research vessel 'Jaywun' sailed to Doha. The boat received visitors from several Qatari governmental and academic entities, including the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, the Ministry of Municipality, Qatar University, Hamad Bin Khalifa University, the Embassy of the United Arab Emirates, and the Embassy of the Kingdom of Bahrain.

During the visit, the delegation reviewed the advanced technologies used on board the marine research vessel 'Jaywun', which was launched in January 2023. The itinerary included a tour of six specialised laboratories for studying marine samples as well as a remotely-operated vehicle capable of diving underwater, which enhances its ability to conduct regional marine studies. The delegation also visited the Qatari research vessel ‘Janan’, receiving a briefing on its marine research capabilities and achievements, and which will help open new horizons for joint research cooperation between the two sides.

Commenting on the visit, Her Excellency Dr. Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri stressed the importance of the visit, saying: “This visit represents an important step in enhancing scientific and research cooperation between our two fraternal countries. The convergence of expertise and the exchange of knowledge on ecosystems enhances joint efforts to protect the marine environment and ensure its sustainability for future generations. We believe that this partnership will contribute to achieving our common environmental goals and enhancing our regional and international standing in this field.”

 

The Qatar visit was conducted as part of a series of ongoing efforts to enhance environmental cooperation between the GCC countries, reflecting the commitment of both parties to work together to protect ecosystems and ensure their sustainability in the future.
